Kirk MacDonald is the first and current MLA for the electoral district of Fredericton-York in central New Brunswick.

A member of the Progressive Conservative Party, Kirk MacDonald was first elected to the 54th legislature in the provincial election held on June 7, 1999 to represent the electoral district of Mactaquac. That election made him, at age 23, the youngest MLA in the history of New Brunswick. During the 54th legislature, he was a member of the standing committees on Public Accounts, Law Amendments, and Legislative Administration.

Mr. MacDonald was re-elected on June 9, 2003. During the 55th legislature, he chaired the Select Committee on Wood Supply and served on the Select Committee on Public Automobile Insurance. He was also a member of the following standing committees: Public Accounts, Private Bills, Crown Corporations, Procedure, Law Amendments, and the Ombudsman.

On February 14, 2006, he was sworn in as Minister of Business New Brunswick in the Bernard Lord Government, making him the first cabinet minister from his region in over 130 years.

Re-elected for a 3rd term in the September 18, 2006 provincial election, Mr. MacDonald became the first member to represent the new electoral district of York North although his party did not form government. He was official opposition critic for areas of interest related to agriculture and aquaculture, Business New Brunswick, the Provincial Capital Commission, and the Population Growth Secretariat. He also served as acting critic for NB Power, the New Brunswick Energy and Utilities Board, and energy. He was a member of the standing committees on Law Amendments and Privileges.

On September 27, 2010, Mr. MacDonald was re-elected as the MLA for York North with one of the largest margins in the provincial election. He chaired the Select Committee on Point Lepreau.

In the provincial election held on September 22, 2014, Mr. MacDonald was re-elected for a fifth term to represent the newly created riding of Fredericton-York.

In May of 2017, Mr. MacDonald accepted the nomination of the Progressive Conservative Members in Fredericton-York to be a candidate in the 2018 provincial election.

Born in Stanley, New Brunswick, Mr. MacDonald is the son of Doug and Barbara MacDonald. He graduated from Stanley High School and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of New Brunswick.

Active in both the volunteer and business communities, Mr. MacDonald contributes widely to the region though his involvement with numerous organizations.
