Kirk MacDonald was first elected to the 54th Legislature in the June 7, 1999, provincial election to represent the riding of Mactaquac. That election made him the youngest MLA in the history of New Brunswick at age 23. During the 54th legislature, he was a member of the standing committees on public accounts, law amendments and legislative administration.

He was re-elected in the June 9, 2003, provincial election. He chaired the Select Committee on Wood Supply and served on the Select Committee on Public Automobile Insurance. He was a member of the following standing committees: public accounts, private bills, Crown corporations, procedure, law amendments and the ombudsman.

On February 14, 2006, he was sworn in as Minister of Business New Brunswick, making him the first cabinet minister from his region in over 130 years.

Re-elected in the September 18, 2006 provincial election, Mr. MacDonald became the first member to represent the new electoral district of York North. He was official Opposition critic for areas of interest related to agriculture and aquaculture, Business New Brunswick, Provincial Capital Commission, and Population Growth Secretariat. He also served as acting critic for NB Power, the New Brunswick Energy and Utilities Board, and energy. He was a member of the standing committees on law amendments and privileges.

On September 27, 2010, Mr. MacDonald was re-elected to a 4th term by one of the largest margins in the provincial election. He chairs the Select Committee on Point Lepreau.

Born in Stanley, the son of Doug and Barbara MacDonald. Kirk MacDonald graduated from Stanley High School and holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of New Brunswick.

Active in both the volunteer and business communities, Mr. MacDonald contributes widely to the region as a director for the Stanley Agricultural Society #35, vestry member of St. Thomas Anglican Church, a proud member of the Friends of Mactaquac Park, and a judge at local 4-H public speaking competitions. He is also active in federal politics as board member of the Tobique-Mactaquac Conservative Association, and as the 2008 provincial co-chair of the Conservative Party Campaign in New Brunswick.
