Jack Carr, was elected Nov. 3, 2008, in a provincial byelection. He represents the riding of New Maryland-Sunbury West. A Progressive Conservative MLA, he is one of only three official Opposition members to win a byelection within two years of a new government mandate since 1908 [Hatfield (PC) 1961, McGinley (L) 1972].

He is the official Opposition critic for areas of interest related to youth and persons with disabilities; wellness, culture and sport; the Premier’s Council on the Status of Disabled Persons; Communications New Brunswick; the Office of the Ombudsman, and the Right to Information and Protection of Personal Information Review Task Force.

He resides in Waasis and is married to Cheryle and between them they have four children, including his son Hunter, and two grandchildren. Carr, his twin brother Jody (Oromocto MLA), and his older brother, Jeff, were raised primarily in the Geary, Fredericton Junction, and Oromocto areas. Their parents and grandparents always impressed upon them the value of hard work, determination, and of helping those in need. Carr’s step-father was a corporal in the armed forces for 25 years. Carr lived in a military family for 11 years.

Carr’s roots throughout New Maryland-Sunbury West include eight generations of family history in the riding. His family descends from the Village of Tracy founder, Jeramiah Tracy. His grandfather, Clayton Boyce, was a life-long resident of Tracy and Fredericton Junction. His grandmother, Alta (Maynard) Webb, is also from Fredericton Junction.

He has held a variety of communications-related positions. He worked for a number of years as a journalist with KHJ/FOX-FM/Capital-FM radio in Fredericton. From 2004-2007, he was a communications officer for Progressive Conservative members of the Legislature of New Brunswick. He was the public relations director at New Brunswick International Speedway (Speedway 660), a communications director at New Brunswick Association for Community Living, and a member of the District 17 School Board.

Carr has always stepped forward to help people in need. Over the years, he helped organize a variety show for people in Oromocto left homeless after a fire, as well as numerous other benefit shows for families in need.

As MLA, Carr continues to use his intimate understanding of how government works to build partnerships between the New Maryland-Sunbury West communities and all levels of government.
