Carl Killen has lived in Saint John Harbour virtually all of his life. A graduate of St. Malachy’s Memorial High School himself, he was Department Head and Teacher of English there for thirteen years of a twenty-eight year career spent teaching English, theatre arts and journalism.

After initial undergraduate work at the University of Western Ontario, he graduated from the University of New Brunswick in Saint John with a Bachelor of Arts degree. At St. Thomas University, he obtained his Bachelor of Educationand later was awarded a Master of Arts degree in English Literature from the University of New Brunswick.

In 2008, he was elected as a councillor for the City of Saint John. While in that position he served on various boards and commissions including Finance, Saint John Energy, Taxation Review, Planning Advisory, Plan SJ, Saint John 225, Rockwood Park Advisory Board and others.

He was elected in 2010 as the Progressive Conservative MLA for Saint John Harbour. He chairs the Standing Committee on Private Bills.

He is the Legislative Secretary to the Minister of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour.

Throughout his teaching career, he was actively involved in his school community, especially in drama, having directed in excess of twenty plays over the course of his career. He has long been a supporter and practitioner of the arts, whether as a member of the Board of Festival by the Sea or as a writer, guitarist/singer/songwriter, director/producer or actor. He has performed with the Saint John Theatre Company and the Lorenzo Society, and was a columnist for the Telegraph-Journal for eight years. He performed regularly at O’Leary’s open-mike night and played with KV resident Jen Mercer at various places around the province.

Carl Killen has two daughters, three stepsons and two step-granddaughters. He is married to Susan, a noted vocalist who teaches music privately.
