FREDERICTON – The Progressive Conservative Party of New Brunswick has set a date to choose its new leader, and the next Premier of New Brunswick.
“Our Party will take a major step toward returning to government on October 18, 2008 when we come together to select our new leader,” said Robert MacLeod, President of the Progressive Conservative Party of New Brunswick.
The convention, which will take place at the Aitken University Centre in Fredericton, will be chaired by former MLA Elvy Robichaud and current MLA Margaret-Ann Blaney, a former leadership candidate at the Party’s last convention in 1997.
“These two individuals are widely respected, highly experienced and will ensure that the convention runs smoothly,” added MacLeod.
Coincidently, the last time the Progressive Conservative Party held a leadership convention was 11 years ago, also on October 18. That convention, which saw Bernard Lord beat out three other contenders, was the largest political event in the province’s history.
In addition to the main convention site in Fredericton, the Party has decided to once again ensure that as many Party members as possible have an opportunity to cast their ballot. The Party will also operate satellite voting stations in various parts of the province. Details on these locations are still being finalized and will be announced shortly.
“I am optimistic that we will have some great candidates and am looking forward to a great race, a great convention, and of course, I am also looking forward to the next leader who will help bring the Progressive Conservative Party of New Brunswick back to government,” concluded MacLeod.
